The program starts each fall semester and is a cohort model.

There are 10 students in the post-bachelor's program and 10 students in the post-certification program.

If you are starting with a bachelor’s degree only, the program is 5 years.

If you are starting with an Ed. Specialist the program will take 3 years.

Completion time may vary for those with a master’s degree in a closely-related field, but not an Ed.S degree.

Faculty will work with those who have a master’s degree to determine the number of credits needed.

A GRE Psychology subject test score is required.

Most classes are held during the day, Monday through Friday, but some may be held in the late afternoon or evening.

No, this is an on-campus program.

The PsyD. in School Psychology is a full-time program. Students who choose work during this program usually have part-time jobs with flexible schedules.

The Psy.D. program adheres to the American Psychological Association's (APA) Standards of Accreditation for Health Service Psychology and Accreditation Operating Procedures as well as the APA’s Implementation Regulations. Full accreditation is expected in 2026.

A School Psychologist is part counselor, part-clinician and part administrator in a school setting.  They seek to apply psychological principles and techniques to the educational environment and are uniquely qualified members of school teams that support students’ ability to learn and teachers’ ability to teach.  School Psychologists are also able to tackle behavioral and learning issues, evaluate performance, implement corrective plans and counsel all involved.

School psychology is recognized as a critical shortage area; therefore, a career is in high demand. The American west region is dramatically underserved. Gonzaga’s Psy.D. program is one of only two in the western United States. Employment of school psychologists will continue to grow because of an increased awareness of the connection between mental health and learning (NASP, 2021).

A Psy.D. degree is a terminal degree for school psychology.  It also offers the ability to gain licensure and launch private practice.  Employment for psychologists is expected to grow 8% from now until 2030 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021) .

You will be qualified to work in a variety of psychologist positions including in schools, hospitals, clinics and/or private practice.

Students have the option to choose their internships and practicums in the specialization of their choice. Some site examples include; school districts, clinical settings, hospitals, court systems, and mental health facilities.  The final year internship can be completed anywhere in the US.

Yes, the doctoral internship is paid.
